High rise wins city approval

Nigel McKenna’s Melview Developments is about to built an 18-level, 477-unit office block at 7 Eden Cres in the heart of Auckland.

As well as transforming the Viaduct Basin with new apartment blocks and a canal, McKenna last month received permission from the Auckland City Council for a new apartment tower near the Hyatt Hotel and Connaught apartment complex.

He has the go-ahead to build 69 two-bedroom units, 18 one-bedroom units and 390 self-contained studios.

“Each apartment is provided with an external balcony area and is self-contained,” the council report said.

Juliet Yates, of the council’s regulatory and fixtures sub-committee, released the list of consents fro the central area last month, which showed two other large towers are planned.

Tony Mayfield and Ezra Eini’s ETC Investments has permission to build a 128-unit, 14-level apartment tower at 135 Vincent St, and Ganda Housing has consent for a 15-level, 203-unit block at 135 Victoria Street West. Jim Speedy’s Covington Group is allowed to add apartments to an existing building at 47 Wakefield St and Kerry Hitchcock’s Unicentre received a ruling on its reserve contribution.
